15 INTERVIEW ANTONY MORGAN because people in the UK didn’t take a lot of lessons. I left without qualifying as a PGA coach, my parents wanted me to work for the family printing business. Twenty years later, in 2002, I had to close down the company, after our biggest UK client went bankrupt on us for a lot of money. I then decided to retrain myself as a golf professional, but couldn’t take the PGA course. Back then, you could not start as a PGA professional if you would be over 40 after completing your five year apprenticeship.” So Antony went a different route. Someone told him about the European and later the Dutch Golf Teachers Federation. “Because of my experience in playing, coaching (since 2003), club fitting, and club repairs (2006) they said I had to become a Dutch golf coach as well. When I first came to Rhoon I started as a master club repairer and golf club builder. A lot of PGA pros turned their noses up, said I wasn’t good enough, because I did not have a particular PGA qualification, and tried to push me out. With all due respect, I go up against anybody. My knowledge about golf swings, in a biomechanical way too, is quite strong. Just like me, they were taught the stereotype, which is exactly what you got to do, but you got to realise that everybody is different. Even twins are not the same, and don’t swing a golf club the same way.” According to Antony, coaches/trainers need to know as many specifics as possible from their students, also from a biomechanical point of view. “Once you understand those things with people, you can then give them their own natural golf swing.” He explains why it is totally impossible to hit a dead straight golf shot, and also which motions people CAN do. “Why would I want to teach somebody have everything perfectly square if they can’t hit the ball perfectly straight?” We talk about grips, how the ball moves in the air, the workings of the golf club, rotational and hammering motions, and how people’s pulses and forearms control the clubhead. “Nothing else.” He then shows vividly how to swing the golf club so that the ball goes into the desired direction. “ “CHANGING YOUR MINDSET” Antony Morgan doesn’t train students solely in golf techniques. “I help people changing their mindsets. I am also listening to everything they say to me, cos I got to know what works or not for certain people. Some people like to be cuddled, others want to be told what to do. Some go for a biomechanical approach, others prefer to visualise something, or need a challenge, and sometimes got to be there for them. One of my students is an 82 year old woman, who has had a heart attack, and is very unstable. She deserves the same attention as everyone else. A fantastic gentleman, whose wife is bound to their home because she’s got Alzheimer’s disease, comes here to get some kind of release, and at the same time learn new golf skills. I really don’t care about my own golf swing, but it pleases me when I can make someone else’s better.” Antony did not take a golf lesson until he was in his twenties. Why? His answer is as unexpected as it is inconceivable. “I was a bit rude and arrogant. I would throw clubs, swear too much, and was banned form the golf course for six months because of my behaviour. Over the years I have changed a lot. That’s because when I started working in my father’s company there was someone who came in and helped me run the business. Every time I give a golf lesson, I realise that I sometimes learn more out of a lesson than the students.” He prefers criticism to receiving compliments. “Criticism gives me something I can work on. When I am finding out something about myself that needs to be changed, I debrief myself on the way home, but half an hour back to Maassluis, where we live, usually is not enough.” INFORMATIE: WWW.ANTONYMORGANGOLF.COM NIETS GAAT VANZELF 0253685.pdf 1 17-5-2021 15:29:45 ONZEKERHEDEN ZOALS HANDELSOORLOGEN EN EEN PANDEMIE KUNNEN TOT FORSE KOERSDALINGEN LEIDEN.
